Entry Requirements

Minimum degree required: Lower Second

Successful candidates will need to meet the entry requirements of both the academy and the provider before enrolling on the course. The formal entry requirements are:

1. Grade C or 4 or above in GCSEs English and Mathematics, or equivalent.

Equivalency tests are available in English, Maths and Science through: www.equivalencytesting.com/

2. Grade C or 4  or above in GCSE Science (for Primary training only).

3. Other GCSEs are required to show a good spread of curriculum subjects (for Primary training only).

4. Specific A Level grades are not needed. However, if you have a grade B or above in the subject you wish to teach this will strengthen your application (for Secondary training only).

5. Degree classification minimum 2:2 or above which should include at least 50% of the subject you wish to train to teach.

6. You must demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly and grammatically in spoken and written Standard English.

7. Overseas qualifications/degrees MUST be checked by NARIC for comparability to UK Standards. It is recommended that this check takes place prior to application.

8. You must have some recent experience of at least one school. This will ideally include a visit and lesson observations across the age and phase range. We particularly welcome applicants who have worked with young people in a variety of settings.

9. Have passed the DfE's Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to enrolling on the course. You must sit the skills tests for the first time within 8 weeks of any conditional offer being given to you.

10. You should be aware of current educational issues.

11. We expect you to be confident in the use of information and communications technology, and willing to extend your abilities in the use and application of technology in your teaching.

12. Proficiency in English
It is vital that you are able to use and understand English well. Without this ability, you will find it difficult to follow lectures, participate in tutorials, and teach classes in your placement academy.   If English is not your first language, you will have to demonstrate a satisfactory level of English language proficiency.

13. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) -  if you are offered a place on a School Direct programme, you will be asked to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the DBS as a requirement of entry to the course.
