What are the entry requirements?

Successful candidates will need to meet the entry requirements of both the academy and the provider before enrolling on the course. The formal entry requirements are: 

1. GCSE Grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics 

2. GCSE Grade C or above in Science (for Primary training only) 

3. Equivalency tests are available in English, Maths and Science but the majority of our accrediting HEI/Providers insist you complete their preferred equivalency tests – for further information please contact a member of our Teaching School on 0203 8743095, alternatively email teachertraining@academiesenterprisetrust.org. 

4. Other GCSEs are required to show a good spread of curriculum subjects  5. Minimum of 2, preferably 3 A levels of good grades, one of which should ideally be in your degree subject area

6. Minimum 2:1 honours degree - 50% of your degree should be in the subject you are wishing to train in or a closely related discipline. (In exceptional circumstances a 2:2 degree will be considered if supported by evidence of other strong academic and personal qualities)

7. Overseas qualifications/degrees MUST be checked by NARIC for comparability to UK Standards. It is recommended that this check takes place prior to application and accrediting HEI/Provider will need to receive confirmation that this has taken place with the relevant documentation 

8. We will look at your experience of working with children, preferably within a school environment within your subject area as this will give you a valuable insight into the teaching and learning of your subject 

9. You should have a genuine interest in education (and particularly your subject area), good communication skills, the ability to take on the role of a professional, a commitment to teaching as your chosen career, a willingness to take responsibility for your own learning and the ability to work well within a team 

10. Have passed the NCTL Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to enrolling on the course

11. You should be aware of current educational policies and issues. Substantial experience of working with children in secondary schools is an added advantage

12. We expect you to be confident in the use of information and communications technology, and willing to extend your abilities in the use and application of technology in your teaching

13. You must sign up with the Department for Education (DfE) to receive your registration number. Information on how to do this can be found at: www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching or call the Teaching Information Line (TIL) on Freephone 0800 389 2500

14. If you studied outside the UK, check the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) website (link is external) to find out whether your qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an undergraduate degree.
